TL;DR: In June 1982 the chairman of Italy's largest private bank was found hanging under Blackfriars Bridge in London, bricks and £10,000 in his pockets. Ruled suicide. Twenty years later the forensics were redone, the ruling became murder, and everyone tried for it walked free.

What actually happened

Banco Ambrosiano collapsed weeks after Calvi's death with about $1.3 billion missing through offshore shells, many linked to the Vatican Bank, which later paid $250 million to creditors while denying wrongdoing, a formulation the episode preserves exactly.

Calvi had fled Italy on a false passport days before his body was found. The 1982 London inquest said suicide; a 2002 forensic re-examination concluded he was strangled and hung afterward. A 2007 Rome trial acquitted all five defendants. The membership lists, the P2 masonic lodge, the mafia-finance threads: the episode flags what is established and what remains allegation.
